When you start the game you are presented with a very beautiful animation which takes you to the game selection screen displaying the selected game’s release date and info. Come what may, scalpers remain a problem in these situations and while most retailers try to prevent this by limiting sales to one copy per customer, eBay prices are skyrocketing into insane numbers. Or maybe Nintendo has other plans with these games in the future and doesn’t want this anniversary collection to interfere with them. This creates a sense of urgency and exclusivity and seemed to work out very well for Disney, but not so much for the consumers. The company releases them for a limited time period and then puts them in their vault again until they think the time is right to release them again. For example, you cannot just walk into a retail store and pick up a copy of one of Disney’s classic animations. Maybe Nintendo is following Disney’s footprints. While some sources speculate it is to help to reach the financial numbers before the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year, which coincidentally ends in March as well, it doesn’t explain why the company would stop the sale of the digital version regardless of physical stock. ![]() By making Super Mario 3D All-Stars a limited release, the company may hope to increase its sales by creating a sense of urgency to secure a copy as soon as possible before potentially missing out. There are a few theories as to why they take on this approach. Why would a company in their right mind treat their fans and its flagship IP like this? Is Nintendo deliberately pulling the same stunt as they did with their Classic Mini consoles? While it makes sense to produce only a certain amount of physical media to wait out the demand, at least for a first batch, Nintendo also puts a stop on the digital sales at the end of March. It would be the case if Nintendo didn’t drop a bomb that the game would be available for a limited time only. Why the rush though? You’d expect that you can just pick it up on the day of its release without experiencing the stressful search to obtain a day one copy beforehand? You know, like any normal game. Retail websites all over the world were closely monitored for its pre-orders to open up and would be out of stock in a matter of hours or even mere minutes. Despite Nintendo‘s reputation of being the family friendly business, it was yet again a bloody mess. ![]() Right after the game was announced in a Nintendo Direct dedicated to Mario’s 35th Anniversary only two weeks before its release, the hunt for pre-orders started. Now that the limited edition of Super Mario 3D All-Stars is out, I will cover the games that we eventually got together with some thoughts on how Nintendo is handling its release and whether “limited” only refers to the time aspect or also to its contents. This introduced a question on its own: would these be emulations or ports of the original games or would Nintendo take the time to remake these titles from the ground up in a modern game engine, following the example of The Legend of Zelda - Links’s Awakening. Speculations about which games would be included quickly led to the conclusion that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World were logical candidates. In the first quarter of this year rumours quickly spread all over the internet that Nintendo was planning to release the Super Mario 3D catalog on the Nintendo Switch to celebrate the event. Following his 25th anniversary in 2010 where the SNES title Super Mario All-Stars was re-released on the Wii in a special collector’s edition, fans were in big anticipation of Nintendo’s celebration plans this time around. Although Mario, Nintendo’s world famous plumber, already existed before 1985, it is the year he premiered in his own side-scrolling adventure on the NES.
